Crime Continues To Fall In West Yorkshire
Friday, 14 May, 2010

West Yorkshire Police Authority has been assessing the performance of the Force at a meeting today and has found there were almost 20,000 fewer victims of crime last year.

The Strategic Planning and Performance Committee has been looking at the way the Force has been performing and how it’s been delivering the Police Pledge to local communities.

During 2009/10 overall crime fell by 9.1% compared with the previous year which means 19,683 fewer victims.

Reductions have been seen in robbery, vehicle crime, criminal damage, assaults and the most serious violent crimes; however the numbers of burglaries remain on the increase.

There have been 196 (-6.6%) fewer victims of robbery, 4665 (-16.3%) fewer victims of vehicle crime, 8068 (-17.2) fewer victims of criminal damage and 1236 (-7.5) fewer victims of assault with injury. The most serious violent crimes have been reduced by almost 10% which equals 139 fewer victims. Burglary has increased though by 2.2% across the County.

The public's confidence in the police to deal with local concerns remains on the increase with almost 50% of residents believe the police do either an excellent or good job in their area.

However the numbers of those satisfied with the service they receive from police has fallen slightly to 82.7%.

The way the Force investigates domestic violence has been under scrutiny since the last committee meeting in February. Over the last year just over 50% of investigations led to detection, this is 3% short of the target set by the Police Authority. A review has been carried out and indications show improvements have been made in recent times. The Committee has heard how further plans are in place to improve detections rates and in turn improve victims confidence in the police.

Chair of the Committee Ann Liston said: "Over the last year I am pleased to see that almost 20,000 fewer people have become a victim of crime in West Yorkshire including reductions in the numbers robbery, vehicle crime, criminal damage and the most serious violence.

"Significant improvements in public confidence have also been shown despite a slight fall in the numbers of people satisfied with the service they received from the Force.

"The Committee continues to scrutinise the performance of West Yorkshire Police and concern has been raised around the management of domestic violence incidents after the numbers of detections have fallen. A review has been conducted and improvements have already started to be made so the Committee will continue to monitor the Forces performance in this area.

"I am satisfied that further work is ongoing to reduce burglary through Operation Titan and positive results are already being seen particularly in areas of Leeds. I am also satisfied that the Force is addressing the concerns raised during the meeting at the start of the year around the investigation of rape and sexual offences.

"Year on year the Force continues to reduce levels of crime within West Yorkshire and rises in the public confidence I feel is a reflection of this."
