A simpler, more modern version of West Yorkshire's crime mapping website is launched today.
Beatcrime.info is an easy to use website which shows people in West Yorkshire crime statistics for the area where they live or work, right down to the level of specific streets. You just enter your post code or zoom in to get to your area of interest.
The website was originally launched in 2005, but has now had a make over. Thanks to public feedback, the site is now simpler to use and includes more detailed maps and localised crime statistics. We firmly believe it is now the best website of its type available in the country.
Crime statistics are shown using dots on maps to identify the approximate location of where the crime occurred, whilst maintaining the privacy of victims of crime. This is the first website of its kind to use dots to paint an accurate picture of what is really going on in local communities. The site not only shows how crime has changed over time but also allows people to compare the crime rate in their area with other areas across West Yorkshire.
Beatcrime.info has a link to the website of the neighbourhood policing team for the area and vice versa to highlight what officers are doing about levels of crime and also offers crime prevention advice.
The website provides dots on maps and crime statistics for a number of offences including anti social behaviour, burglary and vehicle crime. The new site also includes information for all types of recorded crime taking place in your local area. For privacy reasons it is not possible to identify which crime may relate to a specific address.
Beatcrime.info is a concept of the West Yorkshire Police Authority, and is produced in partnership with West Yorkshire Police.
Residents are encouraged to leave feedback when they have visited the site in order for the Police Authority and the Force to further enhance the site so that it offers the information the public want.
Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson, Chair of the West Yorkshire Police Authority said: "I am delighted with the improvements that have been made to the Beatcrime website and I'm sure that people in West Yorkshire will be too. There are already thousands of regular users and I hope the new enhanced website will attract many more.
"The maps are clearer and can be viewed down to street level in most cases. There's information about more crime types and a direct link to the actual Neighbourhood Policing Team covering your area.
"These improvements will ensure that the Beatcrime website remains the best crime mapping system in the country and was recognised nationally with an award last year by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) and also by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber (LGYH). We are committed to providing up to date information which is accessible and helpful to the public in understanding how the police are tackling crime and acting on local priorities. "
David Crompton, Deputy Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police said: “It is important that residents can see an accurate picture of crime levels where they live and work.
“Crime levels are the lowest they have ever been, and by using this website everyone can find out what the Police are doing.
“By using a website such as this, everyone can find out about crime and see what the police are doing about it.
“Neighbourhood Policing Teams are working within the heart of communities and it is important that residents have the opportunity to keep a bird’s eye view on what it is really going on in their area.” |
