Statement from the Chair of West Yorkshire Police Authority
Tuesday, 3 November, 2009

The Chair of West Yorkshire Police Authority, Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson, has issued the following statement about the policing of the EDL/UAF protests, which took place in Leeds on Saturday, 31 October, 2009.

"On behalf of the members of the Police Authority I would like to congratulate everyone involved in policing the EDL/UAF protests on Saturday.

"The police operation enabled both protests to take place with relatively few arrests and no injuries. This outcome is a result of careful planning, consultation with those involved and other stakeholders and the professional conduct of West Yorkshire police officers on the day.

I have been in close contact with the Chief Constable and Command Team on this event for a number of weeks and know the amount of planning that has taken place to ensure a successful outcome. Myself and the Police Authority will be receiving a fuller de-brief in due course, but for the time being it was a job well done and reflects well on the Police and wider communities in Leeds and West Yorkshire as a whole"
